Subgenres Of Metal: Glam.

GLAM.


(Also known as hair metal)


Arose in the late 1970's/80's in the United States, L.A.
Examples: Kiss (wiki) (main example). Alice Cooper  ,(wiki) Poision ,(wiki) Aerosmith (wiki) and a modern day example such as 'The Darkness'(wiki)
Uses traditional and heavy metal aspects whilst incorporating punk rock elements.
Guitar solos were often used, guitar rifts and catchy hooks.
Mise en scene: Long back-combed hair, heavy makeup, theatrical and feminine clothing (drag queen affect) - Tight jeans, leather, spandex and glitter.
MTV (wiki)- This particular genre appealed to the MTV television production company, who helped the rise of the genre.
Performers were highly covered in the press because if their infamous wild lifestyles and late night partying.

                                          

There were two waves that the genre experienced of popularity and where new bands emerged, this was in the early 1980s and the mid 1980s. Bands such as Motley Crue (wiki), Guns n Roses (wiki), Cinderella. (wiki)Stryper (wiki) and Van Halen (wiki)emerged.
However a decline in the success of the genre came about in 1991-97. possibly from influence of bad press such as the film 'The Decline Of Western Civilization  Part II: The Metal Years',(wiki) helping to create a backlash against the genre.
